Time Capsule Diary

Focus on a Decade

Way Way Back !

Home

Dear John,

?I’ve just arrived at Vimy Ridge but the fighting hasn’t started yet. On my way through time I travelled through a tubish sort of thing. As the decades flew by, wind was rushing through my fur and I had a weightless feeling that is very hard to describe. There were turnoffs for every decade and pictures of different famous people on the sides of the tube. When I arrived, I fell at breakneck speed into a trench.

?I’m not sure why I fell into a trench, but I think it had something to do with the fact that I had turned myself into a rat. Since this event happened before I was born, I am invisible and can not be hit by guns or any weapons, so I am safe.

?The atmosphere is very tense and a feeling of hatred is hanging in the air. I can see the Canadian troops standing at the ready, clutching their guns. Their once khaki uniforms now muddy from the trenches and soaked by rain clinging to their bodies. I feel sorry for them because I know how it feels to be muddy and wet.

?As the first line of men climb out of the trenches the Germans start firing their guns. Many of the men fall with either sickening screams or deadly silence, but still more come. I decide to charge with them for the fun of it, knowing that my invisibility will protect me. On either side of me men are falling at a great rate but as soon as one falls another takes his place. We are covering lots of ground, killing many enemies and taking prisoners. Then finally the Germans give up.

?In the end the death count rose to 3598 and the number of wounded totaled 7004 in the Canadian forces. The victory at Vimy Ridge was so important because the Canadians gained the ridge giving them superior advantage and also allowing the French to regain lost ground.

?It was an incredible experience to see this great battle. It was even more special for me because it was something that I had only ever read or heard about and now I got to see it for myself.
